Conventional Product Roadmaps

During the discovery phase of product development, teams often face recurring challenges: 1. Nearly half of product ideas don’t work. 2. Delivery costs and timelines can become unaffordable. 3. Multiple iterations slow teams down. 4. Customers avoid or ignore new features. 5. Legal, financial, or business constraints block progress.

Traditionally, we rely on a conventional product roadmap to address these problems.

While it brings structure, it also creates a major issue:

1. Everything on the roadmap is treated as a commitment.

2. Designers and developers are expected to deliver features, even when assumptions change, or evidence suggests they shouldn’t.

That’s where teams struggle.

A Better Approach

Instead of committing to features, product teams should commit to solving business problems.
The context for these problems should come from:

1. A clear product vision.

2. A strong product strategy.

3. An OKR system that focuses on outcomes, not tasks.

OKRs help teams align around what impact we want to create, not what features we want to ship. The Mindset Shift

Output: “Build feature X by Q3.”

Outcome: “Improve customer activation by 20%”

When teams are empowered to achieve outcomes, they can:

1. Test ideas early

2. Stop building what doesn’t work

3. Adapt within constraints

4. Deliver real customer value

Product success is not about shipping more features. It’s about solving the right problems.
